Weighted Grade Calculator

Most classes don't weigh every assignment the same โ€” tests might count for 40%, homework for 20%. This calculator combines your category scores and weights to give you your exact current grade.

How Weighted Grades Are Calculated

A weighted grade multiplies each category score by its weight percentage, adds those products together, then divides by the total weight used. For example: if Tests are worth 40% and you scored 80%, and Homework is worth 60% and you scored 90%, your weighted grade is (80ร—40 + 90ร—60) รท 100 = 86%.

This is different from a simple average โ€” a weighted average calculator accounts for the fact that some categories matter more to your final grade than others. Always check your syllabus or gradebook (Canvas, PowerSchool, etc.) for the exact weight percentages your teacher uses.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is a weighted grade calculated?
Multiply each category's score by its weight percentage, sum the results, then divide by the total weight. Example: Tests (40%) at 80% + Homework (60%) at 90% = (80ร—40 + 90ร—60) / 100 = 86%.
What if my weights don't add up to 100%?
That's normal if not all assignments have been graded yet. This calculator shows you how much weight is still unaccounted for, so you know your grade may still shift.
Where do I find my class's category weights?
Check your syllabus or your gradebook's grading policy section โ€” in Canvas this is usually under "Grades" > the (i) info icon, or ask your teacher directly.
